WALLACE HOUSE INTERPRETATION GROUP

Wallace Plantation

A group of distinguished historians and creators has come together to discuss best practices in the interpretation of plantation houses and to understand the history of the Wallace Plantation from a full perspective that brings together black, white and indigenous narratives. The group will examine how the Wallace history fits in the context of Harpersville and the surrounding communities both in the past and now. Their work will lead directly into signage and interpretative experiences on the property. On January 5, the Group met at the Wallace House for an orientation and a tour led by Peter Datcher. They then had lunch with the Klein Arts & Culture Board.

The Interpretation Group is chaired by Dr. Elijah Gaddis, Assistant Professor of History and co-director of the Community Histories Workshop at Auburn University. Members include Dr. Lisa Bratton (Tuskegee University), Dr. Hilary Green (University of Alabama), Tyler Jones), Dr. Derryn Moten (Alabama State University), Georgette Norman, and Dr. Shari Williams.
