The Wallace Center for Arts and Reconciliation is proud to invite you to visit our newest exhibit, "Out of Whole Cloth: Marking History & Making Home, 1865-1910."

Out of Whole Cloth: Marking History & Making Home, 1865 - 1910

Emancipation was a beginning and an end. After 1865, millions of formerly enslaved people were left with their freedom and few other resources. This exhibit tells the story of three groups of newly emancipated people and their struggles to make a place for themselves on the Wallace Plantation in Harpersville, Alabama.

The next tour at the Wallace Center is September 27 at 12:00 p.m. Tours last approximately an hour and half. Register here to attend. Tours for larger or targeted groups may be available by appointment and at staff’s availability by emailing info@wallacearts.org. Donations are appreciated but not required.

When visiting please remember that the Wallace House and land are hallowed ground–once a plantation, now a place of solemn remembrance. We invite you to engage in quiet, contemplative reflection on the lives of the enslaved people who lived, labored, and died here.

As an act of honor and remembrance, you may choose to bring an offering. This might be a small biodegradable object, a handwritten note, or a focused intention. Let this offering serve as a gesture of respect—a bridge between the present and the past, a silent vow never to forget.
