The Wallace Center Hosts the Sew Their Names Project at the Shelby County Arts Council

On Thursday, October 16, the Wallace Center hosted a public event at the Shelby County Arts Council to celebrate our newest collaborative exhibit with the Sew Their Names Project. The exhibit features quilts by renowned quilters, including Wini McQueen, Mercedes Braxton, Yvonne Wells, and Charlie Lucas.

Birmingham Poet Laureate Salaam Green created a piece inspired by the collaboration and performed the poem at the event.

We also screened a portion of the film that chronicles the Sew Their Names origin story by documentarian Josh Carples. After the film, Carples and Sew Their Names leaders, Reverend Dale Braxton and Mary Godfrey sat for a post-film panel to discuss the process for creating the project and film.

You can visit the exhibit Monday - Thursday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm until November 19.
