Alabama Archaeological Society Summer Meeting at the Wallace Cemetery
The Alabama Archaeological Society (AAS) hosted its summer meeting at the Wallace House on August 2.
AAS is a volunteer organization for professionals and people interested in history from an archaeological perspective. During the meeting, experienced archeologists will conducted a preliminary survey of a section of the Wallace Cemetery where Black ancestors who lived on the Wallace land are buried going back to the antebellum period. This preliminary survey will help identify unmarked graves of Black Wallace ancestors and preserve their legacy.
Afterwards, the group participated in a tour of the Wallace House and grounds, including the Wallace Center’s newest exhibit, “Out of Whole Cloth: Marking History & Making Home, 1865-1910.” They concluded the day at the Harpersville Community Center where volunteer archeologists presented the result of ground penetrating radar (GPR) tests that indicate the placement of buildings on Wallace land during the antebellum period. Wallace descendants also discussed the organization’s founding and the importance of the Wallace legacy.
