A Joyful Gathering of Memory & Legacy: The 2026 History Harvest
On March 21, 2026, the Wallace Center for Arts and Reconciliation hosted the 2026 Wallace Center History Harvest—a vibrant and meaningful gathering that brought together descendants of two Wallace family lineages in a day of connection, discovery, and celebration. Held in collaboration with Dr. Elijah Gaddis and Professor Robert Finkle of Auburn University, alongside their students, the event reflected a powerful partnership between community knowledge and academic inquiry.
A History Harvest is a genealogical community event where families gather photographs, letters, artifacts, and oral histories to be digitally archived for future generations—an approach used by museums, libraries, and humanities institutions to center community voices in preserving history.
Throughout the day, descendants shared stories, memories, and treasured items, resulting in the documentation of more than 100 artifacts that enrich the historical record of Wallace land and the families connected to it. These materials will become part of a growing archive and will help shape future exhibits to be featured in the Wallace House, ensuring these histories are honored and made accessible to the public. The event also created space for intergenerational exchange, with younger descendants engaging alongside elders to carry forward stories of resilience, family, and place.
The Harvest also sparked creative inspiration. Cellist Ja’Nise Gentry joined the gathering and will compose an original piece inspired by the stories, energy, and spirit of the day—transforming history into sound. Together, the archival and artistic outcomes embody the Wallace Center’s commitment to preserving history through both scholarship and creative expression. We invite you to experience the event by watching the video recap and exploring photos above, and to join us in celebrating the living legacy of these families.
