In the summer and fall of 2018, a dream team of preservationists came together, including Camille Bowman, Alice Bowsher, Lowell Christy, and Robert Gamble. The decision was made to proceed with caution, maintaining the existing building and materials and matching them when needed. We decided to stabilize the building and not to restore it, leaving it as it was in the early twentieth century.
We were fortunate to find contractor Paul Irwin to carry out our plans. A “practical preservationist”, In 2019, he brought together a team of skilled craftsmen to rebuild the chimneys and hearths (Robert Downey) and to straighten the house and replace rotten wood (himself, Eric Cohill and Clint Cox). They used heart pine to replace beams and porch columns and used the same joining techniques they found upon disassembly. Both porches had to be rebuilt and substantial work was done inside the house. They have spent over a year getting the house to the point of use.
