Join the Mt. Willing quilters from the Sew Their Names Project, the Wallace Center, and the Harpersville community for a powerful day of connection, remembrance, and creativity.
Sew Their Names formed through a process of reconciliation and remembrance in Lowndes County, Alabama. In 2021, the Quilters gathered at the Snow Hill Christian Church pavilion to embroider the enslaved people who were included on Hopewell Baptist Church Records records onto small fabric blocks. Since then the quilters help sites across Alabama commemorate the legacy of enslaved people through quilting.
Together, we will honor the names of ancestors enslaved on the Wallace plantation by continuing to sew the names of people who were enslaved on Wallace land on patches of fabric and combining them to form a quilt top. The resulting quilt top will be on display at the Shelby County Arts Council in an Exhibition opening in October that features work from famous quilters including Wini McQueen.
Join us as the renowned Lowndes County quilters share their stories of reclamation and inspiration, guiding participants in the art of embroidery and helping each person contribute to this meaningful tribute.
All are welcome—come be part of this healing and historic event.
